Accomplishments and Future
PALW serves more than 250 of Wilmington's boys and girls each day. In addition to open recreation activities, PALW offers a computer room; a game room equipped with Playstation 2 units; a "Kids Café" that serves hot meals; youth chess and checkers. Kids also participate on step teams or divisional basketball teams.
For adults, PALW offers weekly classes in line dancing. Seniors enjoy the safety and comfort of morning walks around the indoor track.
The center served as an emergency shelter, housing more than 160 people during Hurricane Isabella in 2002.
Our Future
Although much has been accomplished in just seven short years, PALW has merely scratched the surface of this organization's true ability to have an impact on the community. Essential to realizing its full potential are four strategic initiatives upon which the Board of Directors and management are focused:
- Engagement of committed volunteers and supporters, especially officers of the Wilmington Police Department;
- Aggressive fund development to support quality programs;
- Continued program expansion, including robust educational and effective anti-violence components;
- Increased outreach that builds strong relationships with the community at all levels.
